Gian Carlo Menotti Ì Amahl and the Night Visitors reader

Amahl and the Night VisitorsSince its first performance on Christmas Eve 1951 Amahl and the Night Visitors has taken its place with A Christmas Carol as a holiday classic Peformed on every continent and in many languages it has been seen by people than any other opera in historyThe story tells of the night the Three Kings following Although I now realize that this is where I had heard the title I didn't begin this book remembering that the story is actually an opera Knowing that the plot and story make sense because it did read rather strangely as a book Characters seem to do unpredictable things and there are details that seem to get in the way of the story rather than help it along Some of these things might add drama in an opera but as a children's book I found them a bit off putting This does not strike me as a book I'd really want to read to kids at Christmas nor one that I would read repeatedly at that season of the year There is too much violence and negativity some of it somewhat pointless for me to feel that it really embodies the feeling of the season No one in this book strikes me as being very holy peaceful or loving nor does the story seem particularly inspiring Perhaps with music it comes off better
