Somewhere between 35 and 4 stars for this one for me I had no idea what I was getting into here based on the lackluster one sentence book description here on goodreads This book was picked for me in the Randomized 1001 Books challenge SoI read it The book is set from the 1930's through WWII years in Greece It focuses on a lower class community and is mostly about two women Nina and her mother in law Hecuba The book starts with Nina on the cusp of her 3rd wedding her grown daughter from a pervious marriage isn't happy with Nina getting married again so the book starts off with a giant rant from Nina The tone of the whole book is a sort of conversational gossip diatribe mostly by Nina or Hecuba Their tone is often venomous as they discuss family and neighbors The book does portray what it was like to be a poor woman living in Greece in the time around World War II This is a time when the Greeks were wary of an attack from ItalyMussolini We hear of the daily dramas as well as the political situation and tension caused by WWII

I've been on a modern Greek kick lately The characters here are hard and so often so awful but there's a beautiful vitality in the narrative that kept me consistently engaged It's prewar and wartime Athens and Thessaloniki and the characters are just the nastiest most deranged everyday people not sadists or psychopaths just regular down the street dysfunctionals with a belief in the validity of their own stories that made me believe too
