Run Was it an accident Or was it murderAs evidence of Cleo’s secret life surfaces the world begins to see just how hard she strived to get to the top and how fast and far the fall is from celebrity to infamyL R Dorn’s reimagining of Theodore Dreiser’s novel told in the form of a true crime docuseries a la Serial and The Jinx with characters speaking through the “transcripts” of recorded interviews The Anatomy of Desire exposes the ambition sexual passion and dark side of success that readers will find as achingly poignant as they did a century ag. A modern reimagining of Theodore Dreiser’s “An American Tragedy” in which a social media influencer on the rise finds herself on trial after a messy love triangle ends in tragedy This entire book is written in the style of a documentary transcript similar to “Daisy Jones and the Six” a writing style that admittedly takes a minute to get accustomed to but uickly becomes engrossing once you know all of the players It really lends to the effect of feeling like you are IN the room and getting everyone’s unfiltered reactions as the story is happening I personally enjoyed the transcript style and I thought the pacing and plot twists were well done as well The real time narration of the defense and prosecutor teams during the trial process was particularly intriguing and fun to read I also found the social media influencer aspect of this story fascinating and so current It took the classic existential uestion of “what would you do if you knew no one was watching” and put a modern spin on it “how far would you go to keep your followers” To me this book didn’t seem like an outlandish thriller but instead something that could really happen in today’s image obsessed society which makes it even chilling if you think about it A fun and captivating page turner One of the best “mysterythriller” novels I’ve read in a while Thank you to HarperCollins for the ARC

It's that rare book or movie that grips within the first few lines Duncan McMillan the book's documentary filmmaker set the stage with Everyone of us wants to be heard but the words we speak are only the first clues The part of me that wants to solve a great mystery verses just read one took over I slowed my pace and freuently doubled back to make sure I didn't miss a thing Superb authors know how to leave that trail of bits and pieces clues and characters that are than what they appear at first glance The husband and wife team of Matt Dorff and Suzanne Dunn L R Dorn do not disappointBy the time the trial started I was in full people watching mode” You know like when you pass an accident and make eye contact with someone at the scene and things are just different going forward When you want to know everything about those involved but without the pain I found myself caught up by fresh evidence a new angle on a scene or character I thought I knew and understood and a truly humorous conversation in an otherwise gloomy courtroom Somewhere along the line I’d become invested in the lives of peoplecharacters I’d only just seen in snapshots The back and forth drama was riveting and believableIt's been several days since I finished The Anatomy of Desire but I haven't really put it down Duncan McMillan also began with The real meanings often lie between the words That's where I now find myself Pondering What bits of myself do I allow the world to see How would my life have played out differently in a world of bloggers instant messaging photos that never really disappear What do we honestly know about those we love or those we just touch base with from time to time5 stars Mystery courtroom drama modern edgy and thought provoking Enjoy I can't wait for the hard copy audio book and maybe a movieAbsolutely one for the Book Clubs

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher William Morrow for the advance reader edition of the book I have been so very fortunate lately to read some great fiction and this one was devoured within a day That doesn’t happen often I loved it hated it and it made me think and feel for fictional charactersWhy did I choose it Not that it’s relevant but I needed something to read and had finished A Woman of Intelligence by Karin Tanabe yesterday Also irrelevant but YOU NEED TO READ THAT TOO I saw this read in the ueue and thought what the heck Not particularly attracted to the cover but interested in the synopsis I dove in The method is interview style which I loved in Daisy Jones and the Six BUY IT NOW if you haven’t already but for some reason it took a little bit for me to find the rhythm of the interviews so I was at first irritated before becoming interested in the story The premise is that our main character Cleo has been involved in something bad and is being tried for it Since we’re moving back and forth between friends family her attorneys her prosecutors and the media it takes a while to understand what is going on I didn’t like Cleo at first She’s a social media influencer and she’s very driven She’s not painted in a good light but everyone has flaws right Cleo even smells guilty to me and that is saying something given we’re talking about a narrative She’s caught up in the social media world and has to constantly think about her followers her sponsors and potential sponsors and it seems that although she is working her butt off to be successful it’s a weird success where everything you do is under a microscope and you basically put the microscope in anyone’s hands that want to examine you You are trying to be in the spotlight Shocker I ended up sympathizing with her if not somewhat liking her Again this story made me feels such conflicting emotionsThe story is a reimagining of Theodore Dreiser’s novel which I haven’t read and the related movie that I’ve never watched A Place in the Sun Regardless at about 20% into the story I was hooked and didn’t put it down until it was finished By the end I emotionally didn’t know what to think or how to feel about it It made me wonder who is telling the truth who is responsible is Cleo innocent or is she what everyone beyond her family wants her to be; a heartless killer I don’t want to spoil this but I loved it and if you like dark and twisty while told in a way that seems factual interviews this one is for you I don’t give many five stars but this one deserved it in my humble bookworm opinion
