Uestions regarding the orthodoxy of Dale of the eBook #9734 Moody and Ralph Elliott propelled the Southern Baptist Convention SBC toward a re evaluation of its doctrinal statement the Baptist Faith and Message BFM The SBC adopted this document in under the leadership of E Y Mullins when faced by the challenge of modernism This dissertation argues that the Committee on Baptist Faith and Message produced a document The Making Epubthat expressed subtle shifts in Baptist theology This shift had the effect of assuring the conservative base while allowing enough latitude in interpretation for those serving in the academy to teach progressive views After a first introductory chapter chapters and trace the historical developments leading to the formation of the Committee Biblical inspiration and interpretation were key concerns but as chapter demonstrates other concerns Making of the PDF #8608 drew the attention of the Committee Chapters and deal with the ever sensitive issue of the relationship. This is a history of the changes made to the Southern Baptist statement of faith back in 1963 There were two significant motives for making these changes The first was the controversial statements and works that were coming from key individuals in the baptist seminaries The second was the tumultous social changes that were happening in the late 50s and early 60s Namely civil rights the election of a catholic president and communism The changes made are instructive for us today for two reasons The first is that they found a way to create wording on significant controversial areas that would not compromise their belief but still keep it open enough to include other positions that might disagree This is a lesson that our ever divided and divisive modern society could learn fromThe second change was an example of what not to do The SBC was born out of racism They were essentially created from a split as the baptist church for the slaveholding south This shameful past was never publically admitted or dealt with up to this point and with civil rights being such a key issue at the time an excellent opportunity to correct this sinful failure They didn't The original draft of the changes contained only one sentence affirming the dignity of every race and class Of course every race was cut before the final draft even made it to the vote Racism and shameful coverup would continue to plague the SBC for decades to come Fortunately that time would come but not for another 55 years

The Making of the 1963 Baptist Faith and MessageTed Southern Baptists on the left and on the right for years Smith shows the variety of theological dynamics that led to the necessity for such a confession and uncovers from archival material the complex interpersonal relationships that played such a large part in the final form of the Message This is a great read for anyone interested in Baptist theological dynamics or the nature of evangelical negotiation in the twentieth century Tom J Nettles Professor of Historical Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Louisville Kentucky A J Smith is Associate Pastor for Worship and Administration at Seven Springs Baptist Church Calera Alabama and an Adjunct Professor of Church History for Liberty Theological Seminary's Distance Learning Program He taught at Simmons College of Kentucky from to and has spoken before professional societies on Baptist history systematic theology and patristic theology He has authored an article that appears in the new Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionar. In his historical account of revising the Southern Baptist Confession of Faith in 1963 the author’s thesis is that it was the desire of Herschel Hobbs to “avert an immediate denominational split through the reformulation of key historic Baptist doctrines”p8 He did this with “consistent application of the accepted views of soul competency and the role of Baptist confessions” that were integral in the 1925 confession produced by the leadership of EY Mullins a theological forerunner revered by Hobbs p8 This theme is repeated in the book for example “The problem as Hobbs saw it lay in steering a middle course between liberalism and fundamentalism” p33 The author AJ Smith has been a faculty member of the Liberty University School of Divinity since 2006 as an assistant professor of Church History and an adjunct professor at Judson College and New Orleans Theological Seminary He is the senior pastor of Bay Springs Baptist Church in Shelby Alabama serving there since 2013 He holds a PhD in Church History from Southern Theological Seminary and this book was his dissertation In chapters 2 and 3 Smith addresses the committee and the specific concerns they had as well as the social and political context that influenced thinking at the time such as racial integration desegregation of schools pressures from Ecumenicalism and Catholicism and the nature of scripture with regard to the Elliott controversy He analyzes the theology and philosophy behind soul liberty in chapter 4 and how the committee wrestled with protecting the right of private interpretation In Chapter 5 the 1925 Confession is discussed in detail with background information about EY Mullins and the idea of soul competency In Chapter 6 the author outlines four doctrinal shifts and demonstrates how the Baptist view of the inspiration of scripture is central to the faith Four doctrinal shifts were scripture anthropology soteriology and ecclesiology The author emphasizes these because they received the most revision p79 Seminary faculty and that of Mercer University were involved in the revision which was the result of several drafts He examines these revisions and doctrinal shifts thoroughly in Chapter 7 Theological and biblical perspectives of the author guided him to look at issues related to Landmarkism autonomy and centrality of the local church Reformed Calvinistic theology perseverance of the saints depravity of man Arminianism man’s role in salvation process and inerrancy infallibility inspiration of scripture Certainly a strength of this book is the excellent use of primary and secondary sources The bibliography is a trove of biographical accounts of the principal figures involved and contemporaneous news accounts of the time including various state based denominational papers No fewer than 54 books alone were used as primary sources Another strength of the book is its clear organization summaries introduction conclusion and supporting materials He is very deliberate and precise on describing the thoughts feelings actions and context of the sausage making taking place that had the goal of broad appeal among differing factions of the Southern Baptist Convention Smith wrote about his intent for his research “This research project is intended to foster an advance in knowledge with regard to the functional role of confessions within the Baptist tradition how theological trends shaped the confessional expression of the Southern Baptist Convention and how the 1963 Committee on Baptist Faith and Message carried on its work under the leadership of Herschel H Hobbs” p8 The author examines events precipitating the revision of the 1925 confession of faith by the 1963 committee that Hobbs chaired Central issues of the committee according to the book were subtle shifts in Baptist doctrine in reaction to preaching by Dale Moody Christians falling from grace security of the believer and controversy surrounding Midwestern Seminary Professor Ralph Elliott’s The Message of Genesis and its liberal interpretation inspiration inerrancy of scriptures Curious the book does not report how well the completed confession was received by ALL groups involved and what the average church member thought about its impact on the members individually Were they aware of some of the controversies or was it primarily limited to pastors and theologians This is part of the story that is weak and incomplete Future research and reporting may be able to address this Also while the author was very skilled in describing for the reader some of the theology and philosophy the committee wrestled with in simple terms another weakness curiosity is the history behind “key historic Baptist beliefs” For example one uestion might be how many of the denomination’s churches were of a leaning toward reformed tradition versus the number that leaned toward Arminian thought In other words was such a broad appeasement necessary for the denomination to move forward or could it afford to be disassociated with some churches Did some churches choose to disassociate because of the new Confession of Faith In conclusion the author overall has accomplished a magnificent feat in contextualizing the contemporaneous historical accounts biographical reflections and theological considerations of The Making of the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message It is an excellent reference for students to understand the ramifications of denominational meetings church association and convention participation It also underscores the “key historic Baptist beliefs” that make the Southern Baptist Convention such a distinctive denomination Finally it keeps alive the memory of great faith fathers such as Herschel Hobbs and EY Mullins whose critical leadership shaped a denomination

AJ Smith in his book The Making of the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message seeks to establish that Herschel H Hobbs attempted to avoid a division within the Southern Baptist denomination by altering the Baptist Faith and Message in such a way as to appease both the conservative and liberal factions in that denomination He does so by exploring the background of the controversy leading to the revision discussing the factors involved in the debate and finally explaining the revisions that were made Controversy erupted among the Southern Baptist Convention as two Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professors challenged the traditional and conservative understandings of Scripture held by most SBC pastors Professor Dale Moody espoused an ecumenical philosophy which appeared to challenge long held views concerning the eternal security of the believer Professor Ralph Elliott published The Message of Genesis which among other issues denied Mosaic authorship and interpreted the first eleven chapters of Genesis as allegorical This lead to an uproar as many began to wonder why men who held to such beliefs were not forced to submit to the BFM The uestion was raised should professors be given some level of academic freedom or should they be forced to accept the denomination’s statement of faith as a constricting boundary Several other concerns faced the convention at this time including the rise of racism and materialism within the nation Yet the issue at hand was doctrinal Smith takes great pains to show that historically Baptists have held that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and it alone stands as the chief authority in all matters of doctrine Yet this does not negate the use of confessions Baptist associations claim Smith did use confessions to articulate their beliefs and distinguish themselves from other denominations These confessions were expected to followed and used to keep purity within the association Though Baptists also subscribe to the concept of soul liberty this was not seen as an opportunity to depart from confessional standards A shift began to take place under the leadership of EY Mullins Mullins emphasized the teaching of soul competency Soul competency stressed the individual’s role in his response to God This led to a shift away from seeing the Bible as the authoritative standard and a move toward seeing the experience of the individual as a foundational understanding of God All of this would feed directly to the controversy facing the convention in the early 1960’s How can a doctrinal statement such as the BFM be thrust upon individuals who have the freedom to work out their own understandings of Scripture A committee was formed chaired by Hobbs to revise the BFM 1925 Hobbs’s stated goal was only to revise not rewrite the BFM and do so in such a way as to make it palatable to both liberals and conservatives alike No major changes were to be made or so suggested Hobbs The document went through several drafts and the faculty from both SBTS and Mercer University joined in the process While the goal was not to make any major changes several significant chances were indeed made In regards to the Scriptures the committee watered down the Bible as uniue revelation itself and only recognized as a written record of revelation No longer would the emphasis be on Scripture interpreting Scripture but now Jesus would be the key to interpretation In regards to Anthropology man was no longer seen as having once possessed original righteousness and holiness but simply was innocent before the Fall Overall the document left a once Calvinistic understanding and now leaned Pelagian The new revision also denounced Landmarkism and replaced the wine in the Lord’s Supper with “fruit of the vine”One of the strengths of this work is the heavy amount of research done to back up each assertion Painstaking effort was used to support each assertion with uotations taken from the leading figures in each debate even reaching into the past to establish the proper context in which this controversy took place This leaves the reader with little doubt as the reliability of each point mentioned Both side liberal and conservative seemed to be eually represented and fairly uotedSmith is uite straightforward in his approach to writing this book He makes his points very clear and obvious so as to leave no misunderstanding of what he has said is saying or will say The book is organized in such a way as to make logical sense and establish a clear goal in mind He set forth his thesis at the beginning and each chapter served to back up that assertion However I do believe Smith failed in some degree to show how if the BFM 1963 was accepted by liberals and conservatives alike The work ends with the final document written by the committee Though we know from history that the document was accepted how did that come into being While the reader was informed of the reaction of some seminaries what was the reaction from the conservative pastors referred to in the beginning of the book Did the convention vote for final acceptance What was the vote Did it bring a sense of unity to the SBC In short did the document meet the stated goals These uestions go unansweredAnother weakness of this book is found in the lack of consideration given to the effects liberal theology would have on the church How did these new doctrines effect the average believer during this time While much time was spent on the effect seen in seminaries how was the individual in the pew effected While this was not the main focus of the book it would have been appropriate for a few paragraphs of discussionThis work by Smith is a valuable tool to any historian researching the life of the SBC or any person simply wanting to know of how the liberal and fundamentalist clash of yes
